Baby season will be here before we know it, and it’s by far our busiest time of year. Once it starts warming up, our phones don't stop ringing. We desperately need rescue volunteers to help us get these animals to safety during those critical first moments. If you've been thinking about volunteering, this is your chance to make a real impact. Scan the QR code or click the link in our bio to apply.

This loss is a hard one for all of us. Our beloved This loss is a hard one for all of us. Our beloved 27-year-old female black bear, Cinnamon, has passed away.

Born in the Santa Catalina Mountains outside of Tucson, Cinnamon learned to associate humans with food from her mother, who was being fed by residents. Concerned with their behavior around people, the Arizona Game and Fish Department (AZGFD) captured mom and cub and relocated them to the San Pedro area. We do not know what became of her mother, but as a yearling cub, Cinnamon was found getting into garbage and was once again captured. Without a sanctuary to take her, she would have been destroyed. For more than 25 years, Cinnamon’s home was here at Southwest Wildlife.

As a younger bear, Cinnamon was quite shy and didn’t like people, preferring to let her roommates deal with tour days. Over time, she grew to enjoy sitting up front, sunning, grooming, and posing for tour groups, but she never got over her dislike of male bears. They quickly learned to avoid her wrath.

Cinnamon didn’t always choose to interact with her caregivers. Our Assistant Animal Care Manager, Lynne, was the exception. For Lynne, Cinnamon’s choice to trust her was a privilege.

This past spring, Cinnamon began to struggle. We monitored and supported her in every way she would allow, but she refused medication and began to sleep more and eat less. An exam showed her osteoarthritis was advancing, and she was diagnosed with spondylosis, a painful condition of the spine. After discussions with Animal Care and the Medical team, the hard decision was made to let her go. She was ready. Surrounded by calm hands, gentle voices, and many who loved her, she passed peacefully.

Many of us have never known a day at the sanctuary that didn’t include our special girl bear. We’re still processing her loss, and we know this will be difficult for all of you who loved her as well. We thank each of you who made donations to help us help Cinnamon. We could never have done it without you!

SOS Bear Snacks Needed! 🥜🐻 We’re once again in ne SOS Bear Snacks Needed! 🥜🐻

We’re once again in need of nuts for the bear cubs. Sumo (Mama Bear’s cub) and the two original cubs have recently been introduced to one another and will be released together this spring. They’re growing like weeds and using LOTS of energy during their playdates! You all came together and donated bag after bag a few months ago, and we can’t believe how many bags we’ve gone through since then.

Make a bear's day! You can purchase nuts from our Amazon Wish List and have them sent directly to the sanctuary, or bring some along when you visit for a tour or event. Thank you for keeping these growing cubs’ tummies full as release day gets closer and closer.

Zuma had his annual exam last week! Born in 2020, Zuma had his annual exam last week! Born in 2020, Zuma came to us that same year after he was separated from his mother during wildfires. He was dehydrated, malnourished, and far too young to survive on his own in the wild. He's grown up alongside Felix and Zia, who are around the same age, and Poppy, a female lion in sanctuary care.

When it’s time for exams for our largest animals, mountain lions, bears, and wolves, rather than bringing them to the clinic, we bring the clinic to them, equipment, veterinarians, techs, and all. Exam days are always big days for our team, as you can imagine. It’s truly all hands on deck.

Every sanctuary resident gets a full checkup each year, which makes the start of the year a busy time for our vet team, scheduling all of the exams. It’s worth every moment to make sure Zuma and the others stay healthy and strong. We’re grateful for this big, beautiful fella, and our vet clinic team!!
