🎃 Happy Halloween from Southwest Wildlife! 👻 🎃 Happy Halloween from Southwest Wildlife! 👻

This roly-poly bear cub is one of two rescued from the Chiricahua Mountains earlier this spring. When they arrived in April, both were severely underweight and malnourished, but just look at him now! He absolutely loved his pumpkin enrichment.

They say things happen in threes, and last week wa They say things happen in threes, and last week was no exception. Over a span of just a few days, three more bear cubs arrived at SWCC, and as of today, we have yet another cub in our care.

The first came from the White Mountain Apache Reservation after his mother was hit by a car. The second, from Payson, was severely malnourished. The third arrived from Tucson, also underweight and orphaned. And today, a fourth cub arrived, also from the White Mountain Apache Reservation.

All four are much smaller than they should be for this time of year. Drought has made natural food and water scarce, pushing wildlife into populated areas. As tempting as it may be to help, feeding wildlife creates dangerous patterns that put both animals and people at risk. Please, never feed wildlife.

With these new arrivals, we now have 12 bears in our care, including Mama Bear and her cub, two spring rescues still candidates for release, and our four beloved residents: Griz, Iggy, Cinnamon, and Heavenly. Caring for 12 bears is no small task, and we can't do it without you. Each of these bears, from the tiny orphaned cubs fighting to gain weight, to Mama Bear healing with her baby, to our beloved resident bears, depends on the generosity of supporters like you.

Interested in helping us keep these bears' food bowls full? Here's how you can help:

Clinic care complete! This 6-month-old raccoon was Clinic care complete! This 6-month-old raccoon was rescued at Sky Harbor Airport by our friends at @libertywildlifeaz and transferred to our facility. After spending some time in the clinic, he's been given a clean bill of health! Since this photo was taken, he was moved to his outdoor enclosure, an important step in the rehab process before he's ready for release.

It’s Wolf Awareness Week, and we’re, of course It’s Wolf Awareness Week, and we’re, of course, celebrating the Mexican gray wolf, also known as the lobo.

The Mexican wolf is the smallest and southernmost subspecies of gray wolf, listed as endangered since 1976. Today, 12 lobos call Southwest Wildlife home. We’re proud to be part of the AZA’s SAFE program (Saving Animals From Extinction), which helps manage the population of Mexican wolves in captivity to help conserve wild populations.

Vera and Melly, two wolves here at SWCC, have both raised pups that now live in the wild. Vera has had 16 pups released into wild packs, and many of them have gone on to raise pups of their own. In 2022, Melly gave birth to two pups at age 11. Just days later, Arizona Game & Fish flew them to be fostered into a wild den. Of the pups fostered that year, only two were released in Arizona, and both were born right here at Southwest Wildlife.

Vera and Melly still live at the sanctuary and can be seen on our tours. To stand just feet away from these endangered wolves is a truly incredible experience.

We receive no state or federal funding to care for the Mexican wolves. Your support makes this work possible and helps ensure that wild lobos will one day roam in greater numbers.
