If you’ve ever visited Southwest Wildlife, chances are you’ve met Felix. As one of our most photogenic Sanctuary residents, this handsome mountain lion has become a favorite among guests, often stopping visitors in their tracks with his striking appearance and unmistakable face.
Recently, Felix stepped out of the spotlight for a visit to our Veterinary Hospital as part of his annual wellness exam. The process began in his enclosure, where he was safely sedated by our veterinary team before being carefully transported to the clinic for a comprehensive medical evaluation. While guests often see Felix confidently lounging in his enclosure with his “roommates” Zuma, Poppy, and Zia, these annual exams give our team an important opportunity to look beyond the surface and assess his health more closely.

Preparing for an exam like this takes extensive planning and coordination. Animal Care and Veterinary staff work together to ensure every detail is in place before the procedure begins, allowing the team to complete all necessary evaluations as efficiently and safely as possible. Lynne S., our Assistant Animal Care Manager, frequently trains with Felix to make medical procedures run smoothly. By training Felix to willingly receive injections, it makes the whole process relatively stress free for him!
Once in the hospital, Felix received vaccines, radiographs, bloodwork, a dental assessment, and other routine diagnostics designed to monitor his health and establish a year-to-year baseline. This year’s exam also confirmed that Felix is still our largest mountain lion at the Sanctuary.
Unlike people, mountain lions instinctively hide signs of illness or injury, which makes routine examinations especially important. These annual evaluations give our veterinary team the rare opportunity to perform hands-on assessments and identify subtle changes long before they become serious concerns. By monitoring Felix’s health closely, we can make sure he continues to receive the specialized care he needs to thrive.
Providing this level of care takes far more than a single morning in the hospital. It requires specialized equipment, ongoing staff training, careful preparation, and a dedicated team committed to the well-being of every animal in our care. Most importantly, it requires the support of people like you. Your generosity makes it possible for Felix and other Sanctuary residents to receive critical preventative care, advanced medical monitoring, and the highest standard of veterinary treatment throughout their lives. Because of you, animals like Felix can continue serving as powerful ambassadors for their wild counterparts while receiving the exceptional care they deserve.
